im no doctor but i do enjoy asthma, if it isnt athsma it could be many things. im guessing it could be pneumonia. If I be you I would contact a doctor for medicaton or for an appointment.
It could be bronchitis, emphysema, some other sort of respiratory infection. Some medications slow your breathing too. And, next there's allergies that can make your throat swell shut. Heart disease and anyone overweight/obese can also be problems.
Sounds like the cross-examine is kind of too common. So, if it seems serious see a doctor asap. Either route I'd see a doc.
