If a long time smoker stops, will the lungs repair themselves over time?
i am a student in the medical pasture and no the lungs do not repair themselves you have what are telephone aveoli and they burst from a smokers cough and do not regenerate. the lungs will however not get any worse unless it is already too behind .

Yes apparently they will. I be told it could take up to 10 years, but most of the remedial starts right away.
no they are kinda screwed but they do TRY, they don't repair themselves ENTIRELY but they do try
